UN Member States Working to Achieve Gender Equality

Today, 1.6 billion people still live in poverty, and nearly 80 per cent of the extreme poor live in rural areas. Many of them are rural women. They continue to be economically and socially disadvantaged – for instance, they have less access to economic resources and opportunities, quality education, health care, land, agricultural inputs and resources, infrastructure and technology, justice and social protection.

Women’s Foundations Join to Help Low-Income Women and Their Families

The New York Women’s Foundation and Ms. Foundation for Women joined members of Prosperity Together, a nonpartisan partnership of 32 public U.S. women’s foundations located in 26 states and Washington, D.C., to announce Year 2 Two (2017) results of its collective five-year, $100 million funding commitment to ensure economic security for low-income women and their families across the country.

Intense Menopausal Symptoms of HIV Positive Women Are Most Often Not Addressed

Twenty-three women, African American, with an average age of 47, living with HIV for 13 and a half years on average, who had had at least one menstrual period in the last year were interviewed and completed a questionnaire addressing psychological, somatic and vasomotor symptoms. All of the women reported hot flashes; 78% had trouble sleeping two or three times a week; and 78% felt tired. When asked, 87% of the women reported that they had talked to their primary care physician about their symptoms, but only 20% of them received any treatment.
